ARTIST: Dover Island
TITLE: Bad Advice Club
REVIEW BY STEPHANIE TANG

Think about a good friend you haven’t seen in a while, now imagine spotting them at a party and them walking over to give you a hug. “Bad Advice Club” is that hug, one that envelops you, arms wrapped around with pats on the back. Oozing warmth and carefree vibes Dover Island fuses indie pop with light-hearted rock in their latest single.

There is something very genuine with everything Dover Island puts out. There’s heart behind the honest lyrics creating warmth, with the thick, deep bass line walking along in contemplative thought. While not the most uplifting song in sound it does carry a beat you can bob your head to. There’s a slow relaxed energy that doesn’t want to be rushed along which is soothing compared to the hectic daily grind.

Listening to ‘Bad Advice Club’ you can’t help but picture hazy summer evenings cruising along with the windows down. On the playlist there’s Dear Seattle, Skeggs and WAAX whom fans of would agree Dover Island also fit perfectly with. Laidback and chill is the vibe with a very carefree larrikin attitude.

Clean, clipped and crisp, the drumming rhythm is the backbone holding the track together. That double hit really gives a kick and swing to the beat, which soon becomes hypnotic. With sweet riffs peppered throughout strummed by grainy guitars its like the satisfying fizz of bubbles opening a can. The melody gets interesting as volume and intensity builds few verses in before the chorus crashes back in with renewed spirit. A much needed peak in the track as by that point sound was getting a little repetitive and flat.

Not your pretty female leads, O’Kelly’s vocals are throaty and raw. The unpolished but expressive vocals mix very well with the band’s grungy sound. It doesn’t sound perfect, but it does sound like a group having an honest good time.

This track could not have come at a better time. A sweet tune to round out the year and soundtrack some new years celebrations.

RATING: 6/10
