It’s amazing how friendships and connections are formed by people in the music community by getting out to shows and being a part of the scene. Melbourne’s Crooked Thieves are one of those bands who formed out of these connections. Despite only being a band for around 10 months, they’ve accumulated plenty of live experience and recently released quite a hypnotic video for their debut single Dancing In The Crowd. We caught up with the band to discuss the single, their influences and dig a little deeper into their formation.
Tell us how Crooked Thieves got started?
We (Emma and Shane) met at a Violent Soho gig in Brisbane and started playing music together pretty much straight away! After playing in a band up there for a few years, we moved down here to start a new project. Melbourne seemed like the perfect place, and we formed Crooked Thieves in March this year.
Who would you say your biggest influences as a band are?
Metallica, Sick Puppies, Violent Soho, Lamb of God, INXS and Silverchair to name a few.
You’ve just released your new single ‘Dancing in the Crowd’. Tell us how the song came to be and its meaning lyrically?
We wrote the song about a year ago, before we started this band. It started off with that opening riff and we just went with this bass-heavy vibe, infused with hard rock and aggressive vocals.
Lyrically, the song is centered around that feeling you get when you completely lose yourself in the music, and dance like there’s no one around.
You also released a companion video! Who did you work with to create it?
The video was shot & edited by local videographer Martin Wood. We used a cyclorama in Brunswick for the indoor scenes. It was so much fun to film! The awesome performances outside by Shane and the dancers was done in freezing middle-of-the-night Melbourne winter. Pretty sure we all got sick but it was worth it!
Were the dancers people you knew or just hired for the clip?
They are friends of ours who happen to be very talented dancers / performance artists
If you could play a show with any band that has ever existed, who would it be?
You’ve mentioned you’re working on your debut EP. When can we expect to hear some more music?
We have four more songs written that we’ll be releasing on our EP along with Dancing in the Crowd. It’s due to come out early next year.
What would be your favorite show to date?
Our favorite show so far was definitely our single launch. We had a great team help us plan it, put a lot of work into it and had a fantastic time at the Penny Black celebrating with friends and local bands SNDWNR and Mantell.
Who are five Aussie locals we should be listening to?
We frequently put up playlists on our Spotify of our favourite local bands – There are too many to list!
What’s the plan for the rest of 2018?
We’ve just joined the roster at Rocky Water Promotions, so we are really looking forward to playing some great gigs with them. The plan is to gig like crazy, finish off recording these songs and start planning the release!
